A WWII map of Derry’s port facilities has been discovered and digitised by the Heritage and Museum Service of Derry City and Strabane District Council. It provides a detailed insight into the American and British facilities available to repair and supply destroyer escorts in Derry during the Battle of the Atlantic.
The colour map is dated June 28th 1942 and is signed off by the Officer in Charge of TAF Contract 4850, Needham. The purpose of the map is to show the distance of the ‘Base One’ sites from Londonderry Port. As well the new US Navy facilities, the map shows the port facilities already established by the British Admiralty, including the Admiralty Wharf at Lisahally and the Harland & Wolff ship repair workshops and dry dock at Meadowbank.
The map also demonstrates the importance of the present day Magee Campus of Ulster University as the administration and communications hub for both the US and British navies. Interestingly, Ebrington Barracks is not included in this map of port facilities.
